Compacts are light and easy to use, but so restricted in ability and the quality is frustratingly poor IMHO.

Still I got a few shots under leaden grey skies and it did give me the chance to visit the Landscape Photographer of the Year Exhibition at the National Theatre as I waitied for my train home. Great to see images from Corica and Jason Theaker from Flickr displayed - you have motivated me to enter the 2009 competiton guys.

There is a certain style that appeals to the judges - all technically superb, beautifully composed - but the image has to have something else to make it stand out. (Take a look at the winning image, for example) So I have got to try and take an image that fits the bill. Easier said, than done. I am off on a trip to Scotland soon and am hoping this will give me ample opportunity to bag that ultimate image.

Reading at the moment - 'The Photographers Eye : Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos' by Michael Freeman. A technical book to help me with composition - an area I feel I really need to improve. It is a bit early to say if it will work wonders with me - but so far I am impressed. It is heavy going, but I was fed up with lightweight articles in magazines - if I read about 'the rule of thirds' ever again, I will scream!
